keeping the right frame of mind, when life keeps interrupting

This is a slight expansion of a post that I popped in a facebook group I am part of yesterday. My experience of the constant interruptions that seem to take place whenever I try to do something for myself… A reminder to everyone that despite the interruptions, keeping a relaxed frame of mind is the best option…

frame of mind

The universe was being a shit today, and testing just how much I REALLY wanted time to myself…

After a long day of photographing a baby and toddler at my studio, I decided a quick horizontal meditation in my bed with nice warms covers over me was the plan… (haha it was super cold here today – any excuse to jump back into bed)
I had an hour before school pick up time, but set the alarm on my phone just in case I dozed off a bit…

So I lay down, get warm and press play on the guided meditation I had planned to listen to. Get just over a minute in and it stops playing. The phone had gone to sleep mode and so stopped…
Argh!
So I open my eyes a tiny bit to find the phone, change the settings to never go to sleep and press play again…
Half way through the guided meditation, at the EXACT moment that Amy says, we are now going to do a 5 minute meditation “this is your time to just be now”
The phone rings….
Argh. Forgot to turn it off!
Deal with that.
Turn phone to airplane mode.
Press play again.
Meditation stops loading after about a minute (because I have effectively turned the internet off by switching to airplane mode).

You get the point…

So what I am trying to say is, no matter what gets thrown at you ~ just smile, breathe and let the frustration wash over you. Reset, and try again…

It will get easier.

Next time you will turn off sleep mode, turn off the phone, make sure the meditation is loaded properly, unplug the doorbell, remember to pee before you get comfortable, make sure you are just warm enough…

But even if you do all those things – there will be something else. Guarantee it.

The postie will come, with a parcel that does not require a signature. But because he is so friendly and he likes to hand deliver every parcel to save you walking to the letterbox (and he can see your car in the driveway, so clearly you MUST be home) he will knock… and keep knocking. After a day driving around in a van, maybe he just wants to see a happy face, and say hi… Can’t be annoyed at that, right?

Or a bird and his 17 friends will decide that now is the perfect time to scratch around in the guttering and on the roof just above your window. You freak out because it sounds like a family of giant rats… and they are so loud that they could actually be inside the roof. Or worse – in the room… (that one usually happens to me about 7am on weekends – never during the week when I am already awake)

No matter what the interruption is ~ just smile, breathe and let the frustration wash over you. Reset, and try again…

Because stress wont help your frame of mind!
Cursing and swearing at birds will not prompt them to only make noise when it is convenient to you…
Once you need to pee – you need to pee. Putting that off wont do anyone any favours…
Because that phone call ~ could be the once in a lifetime opportunity you have been waiting forever for…
Because maybe, there is something else more important for you to do right now…

Yes, you (we all) deserve a few minutes of time without interruption or excuse.

Because you are incredibly amazing!!!

But sometimes perfectly imperfect is absolutely acceptable.

perfectly imperfect frame of mind

Does this happen to you when you plan some down time for yourself? Do the kids wake up, or do family members drop in unexpectedly? Do you plan a nice relaxing bath, and then realise there is no hot water? Do you look forward to sitting down with the slice of cake you have been saving and a magazine – and realise ‘someone’ took it to school in their lunch box and there is none left?

I would love to hear from you in the comments!

We can help you dream bigger to consciously create a life of whimsy + wonder.

Awesome post, happens all the time. I’m so used to it that I notice when “it’s just not meant to be” and I try to shrug it off. I try, not always joyfully, but ah well xReplyCancel

LOVE this! Especially the postie and the bird with his 17 friends. Perfectly imperfect is absolutely acceptable – I think that’s my new favourite mantra. xReplyCancel
